Army constructing causeway, retrieving boats

By K. Subramanian

NAGAPATTINAM, JAN. 5. Army personnel are now assisting the Nagapattinam district administration in restoring normality in the coastal areas. The personnel are from the Madras Engineering Group and Centre at Bangalore, known as `Madras Sappers'.

Brig. José Manalapan, in-charge of the overall relief operations, told The Hindu that the personnel were constructing a causeway at Akkaraipettai and Kallar and retrieving boats along the coast. The Armymen were also helping the fishermen resume fishing. About 20 fishermen were sent in seven boats as a confidence building measure.

Six teams were formed for repairing the motors of the damaged boats. The Army presented an outboard motor costing Rs. 26,000 to a fisherman, Sekar, at Akkaraipettai. It put up a desalination plant at Seruthur, near Velankanni, and provided 6,000 litres of treated water to the village.

The Army personnel were removing debris in the coastal areas, particularly at Keechankuppam, Akkaraipettai and Velankanni, said Brig. Jose Manalapan.
