Minnows face off

CHITTAGONG, JAN. 5. Zimbabwe makes its return to Test cricket here on Thursday, while host Bangladesh looks to register its maiden win in 34 matches.

Zimbabwe has not held International Cricket Council (ICC) Test status since a boycott by most of its top players prompted a massive loss to Sri Lanka in May. Subsequent tours by Australia and England featured limited-overs matches only.

The first of two Tests between cricket's lowest-ranking Test-playing teams will be contested at the M.A. Aziz Stadium in Chittagong, while the second Test will begin in Dhaka on January 14.

The teams:

Bangladesh: Habibul Bashar (Capt.), Khaled Mashud, Nafis Iqbal, Javed Omar, Mohammed Ashraful, Rajin Saleh, Aftab Ahmed, Mohammed Rafique, Enamul Haque, Tapash Baishya and Mashrafe bin Murtaza.

Zimbabwe (from): Tatenda Taibu (Capt.), Tinashe Panyangara, Douglas Hondo, Elton Chigumbura, Prosper Utseya, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Barney Rogers, Vusimuzi Sibanda, Hamilton Masakadza, Tawanda Mupariwa, Brendan Taylor, Terrence Duffin, Graeme Cremer, Christopher Mpofu and Mluleki Nkala. — AP
