TUMKUR, JAN. 5. The dharna by more than 450 gram panchayat employees at the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat office here entered its third day today. The employees are protesting against the Government's failure to regularise their employment even though some have worked for nearly 20 years. Due to the delay, they have been denied all service related benefits. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions are supporting the dharna. CPI (M) leader, Venkatesh, told The Hindu today that in 2003 the Government had issued orders to regularise the services of gram panchayat employees. However, the orders have not yet been implemented, he said. Mr. Venkatesh said that the demands of the gram panchayat employees included the promotion of lower-level staff to second division clerk grade, posting of employees under the new Vikas Panchayat Scheme, and payment of all pay arrears immediately.
