Kannada Bhavans planned in Udupi district

UDUPI, JAN. 5. Uppunda Chandrashekhara Holla, Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishath president, said on Wednesday that he will build "Kannada Bhavans" in Udupi, Karkala, Byndoor, Brahamvar, and Kundapur in the district.

He told presspersons here that land has been identified for the bhavans in Udupi, Byndoor and Brahmavar. The bhavans in other centres will be built on land belonging to the parishath. Land will be sought from the Government. If the Government land is not available, then land will be purchased with the help of donors. A committee will be formed for this purpose. Each of the bhavans proposed will be cost Rs. 7 lakhs to Rs. 8 lakhs.

A book will be brought out on 30 achievers of the district from 1900 to 2000. Seminars will be held on integrated works of the litterateurs of coastal areas. A comparative study of their works with the works of litterateurs in other parts of the State will be done.

Emphasis will be on the study of history, arts and culture of the district.

Sahitya sammelans will be held and more importance will be given to deep study of literature at such programmes.

Women and children will be encouraged to hold literary meets. To help budding writers and poets, story workshops and poetry workshops will be organised. More importance will be given to literary activities in rural areas. Literary talents of school and college students will be identified.

The proposal to bring out a tri-monthly literary journal, Udupi Kannada Nudi, will be examined. Good works of writers would be published and publicised at the State level.

Efforts will be made to see that books of the Kannada Sahitya Parishath, the Kannada Book Authority and the Kannada Sahitya Academy are made available to people at a low price. Efforts will be made to increase the membership of the parishath and to create more endowments, Mr. Holla said.

K.S. Subrahmanya Basri and Ganesh Maiyya, secretaries of the parishath, Madhavi Bhandary, Udupi Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishath president, Kandavar Raghuram Shetty, Kundapur Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishath president, and Sudhir Kodavoor, Udupi Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishath secretary, were present.
