Damage in Kancheepuram district put at Rs.79 crores

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, JAN. 5. The tsunami damage in coastal villages and fishing hamlets in Kancheepuram district has been put at Rs.79.45 crores.

The Collector, R. Venkatesan, told reporters here today that the Fisheries Department had estimated that boats and nets worth Rs.34.17 crores were either damaged or lost. Local bodies have estimated that Rs.20.81 crores worth infrastructural facilities have been damaged.

Mr. Venkatesan said around 7,000 families had lost their dwellings. Oyyalikuppam, Pudupattinam Kuppam, Meiyurkuppam, Sadras Kuppam and New Kalpakkam Kuppam were the worst hit. So far, 128 deaths had been reported in the district with the highest number of casualties in Thirukazhukundram block with 86 deaths followed by 21 in Tambaram block, 14 in Chengalpattu and 7 in Cheyyur. A sum of Rs.1 lakh each to the families of the deceased had been distributed to 113 families.

Relief materials have been provided to 9,382 families, including 2,289 labour families, in fishing industry. Temporary family cards have been distributed to 1,058 families out of the total 1,583 families.

The district administration has arranged for testing the quality of drinking water available in the affected areas since a majority of water bodies suffered saline water intrusion. Though the monuments in Mamallapuram and Sadras escaped the fury of the killer waves, the supporting facilities in these areas were affected resulting in drastic reduction in the number of tourists, including domestic tourists. Boating facilities at Muttukadu, Mudaliyarkuppam and Idaikazhinadu suffered severe damage. The district administration has so far received around Rs.1.65 lakhs as contribution from the people towards the Chief Minister Relief Fund.
