NEW DELHI, JAN. 5. The Delhi police are to set up a cyber forensic lab to bring in more efficiency and expertise in its investigation of cyber crime cases. Last year, they registered 37 cases under the Information Technology Act, while they received hundreds of complaints of various types. Replying to doubts raised about the ability of the Delhi police to handle cyber crime cases in the wake of the recent video clip case, the Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, said the police had the wherewithal to conduct proper probes into such offences. He informed that over 50 per cent of the cases registered in 2004 had already been challaned, whereas investigations were on in other cases. Conceding that there was a need to keep pace with the incessant innovations in the world of information technology, Dr. Paul said there were plans to set up a cyber forensic lab which would act as a bank of software and hardware necessary for probes involving cyber media.
