LONDON, JAN. 6. Small Island, Andrea Levy's saga of Jamaican immigrants in post-War Britain, was named the novel of the year at the Whitbread Book Awards. It was selected from a shortlist that included Louis de Bernieres' Birds Without Wings and Alan Hollinghurst's Booker Prize-winner, The Line of Beauty. Levy is the favourite to win the overall prize. The other finalists are Susan Fletcher's Eve Green, which won the first novel prize; John Guy's biography, My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots; Geraldine McCaughrean's children's story, Not the End of the World; and Michael Symmons' poetry volume, Corpus.
