BELLARY, JAN. 6. Anupama Sundar, gynaecologist, has called upon women to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. She was speaking at a function jointly organised by the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Bellary, Karnataka Seva Sangh, and Deen Moulali Mahila Sangha to create awareness among about the dreaded disease at Hussain Nagar here on Thursday. Shekamma, president of FPAI, inaugurated the programme. Proper education, awareness, and exercising caution would help the women not protect themselves but also contain the spread of the disease. The programme coordinator of Bellary AIDS Prevention Society, Jayakumar, explained the causes responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS. He said that the use of condoms prevented the transmission of the disease. Prahalad, advisor from Charaka AIDS Project of United Nations Development Programme, urged people to treat the patients suffering from HIV/AIDS with humanity. S.V. Kulkarni, branch manager of FPAI, Bellary, spoke about the role of the community in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
