Water supply schedule

DHARWAD JAN. 6. Water will be supplied to the following areas in Dharwad on Friday, according to an official press release issued here today.

Attikolla, Danunagar, Tejaswi Nagar, Sangolli Rayanna Nagar, Purohit Nagar, Kakkayanagar, Hale Tejaswi Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and Kalyana Nagar 1st to 6th crosses (5 a.m. to noon).

Jannat Nagar, Vivekanand Nagar, Sattur Colony, Yalakkishettar Colony, Ambedkar Nagar, Sharada Colony, Hukkerikar Nagar and Kalyan Nagar 7th to 15th crosses (noon to midnight).

Elected

BIDAR JAN. 6. Suryakant Shetkar has been elected president of the district unit of the Sahakar Bharati, a federation of co-operative socities. Mallikarjun Patil, B. Manohar, Kalyanrao Malage, and Sham Halmandage were elected vice-presidents at a recent meeting.

Ganapati Shambhu was elected secretary, Trimukh Gundoji joint secretary, Basavraj Swamy treasurer, Amrit Hosmani office secretary, and Rajshekar Hosalli was elected convenor.

Virendra Singh Thakur was elected president of the Bidar city unit, Rajeshwar Bachha vice-president, Sudhakar Hebbale secretary, and Ajay Patil was elected treasurer. Rajraddi was elected president of the Bidar taluk unit, Kushalrao Yaba and Mahadev Patil vice-presidents, Ramesh Balebai secretary, Prabhureddy Budhera and Nandakumar Nirna were elected joint secretaries.

Apprenticeship

programme

MYSORE Jan. 6. The SDM Institute for Management Development, Mysore, has invited applications for its apprenticeship programme for 2005.

According to a statement from the institute director, the training programme will be of one-year duration for graduates and diploma holders in computer science. A stipend of Rs. 1,970 for graduates and Rs. 1,400 for diploma holders will be given. They will be trained in web designing, construction and development of digital libraries and networking concepts. Donation

MYSORE Jan. 6. The Railway Pensioners' Association, Mysore, has appealed to all Railway pensioners to donate at least a day's pension to the tsunami relief fund.

In a statement, the association's general secretary, R. Sreenivasa Raghavan, said the association has donated Rs. 2001 as the first instalment.

The monthly meeting of the association will be held at the Dalvoys' School in Mysore on January 9.

Foundation stones laid

HASSAN JAN. 6. The Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, has observed that the pass percentage of rural area was on a rise and a sharp decline of the same in the urban areas.

Mr. Revanna, who laid the foundation stone for a resource centre costing Rs. 32 lakhs and for the construction of additional classrooms in Holenarsipur schools under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Yojan on Thursday, promised to release more funds under National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) scheme for the construction of primary school buildings in Holenarsipur taluk.

He also laid foundation stones for several works, including the construction of a community hall in Aaladahalli at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs, a water tank under piped water scheme, asphalting roads up to Gullanapura in Holenarsipur taluk, Swacha Grama Yojane in Modluhippe, and removal of silt in Holekote tank for Rs. 21.50 lakhs.

Appeal

BIDAR JAN. 6. The Bidar Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, to withdraw the newly imposed service tax on traders.

In a letter to the Minister, the president of the chamber, B.G. Shetkar, said that the tax will lead to an increase in the prices of household goods and items of daily consumption. "The tax will affect the business of petty traders, corporates such as information technology companies, and educational institutions. And since all traders pass on the tax burden to buyers, the common man is bound to suffer," Mr. Shetkar said in the letter.

Festival

BIDAR JAN. 6. The week-long annual car festival of the Venkatesh temple at Chintalgera in Bidar taluk will begin on Friday.

Various religious rituals such as Shikhararohana, Bhajan and Keertan will be held during the festival. Devotees from Karnataka, Andhra and Maharashtra will participate, a release said.

Destroyed

SIRSI JAN. 6. An elephant has destroyed coconut and areca nut plantations belonging to Vishweshwar Bhat of Kolegeri village in the Kannigeri Gram Panchayat limits, according to reports reaching here. The elephant has also been sighted at other places in the area. The people have requested the officials of the Forest Department to take steps to drive back the animal into the forest.

Donation

SIRSI JAN. 6. The prize money (Rs. 10,000) of "Pavana Parisara Award" instituted in the memory of freedom fighter, the late Narayan Hegde, and Parvati Hegde Bakkemane, will be donated to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund to aid the rehabilitation of the tsunami victims, according to a release by the convener of Pavana Prathistana, Shripad Hegde Bakkemane.

Singing contest

MYSORE Jan. 6. The Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA), in collaboration with Ranjana, will organise a "sing to music" programme with a view to identifying hidden talent.

The preliminaries of the programme will be held at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds on January 12 and 13. Those interested from Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Kodagu districts can contact the organisers at Ranjana, 112, 1st Floor, 4th Main Road, N. Block, Kuvempunagar, Mysore, for registration.

The finals will be held on January 15. The first 10 members selected in the final round will be chosen for an audiocassette recording.

MANGALORE JAN. 6. Shilpa Veena D'Souza of St. Ann's College of Education, Mangalore, has secured the first rank in the B.Ed. degree examination conducted by Mangalore University in September, 2004.

The Registrar (Evaluation), K. Sooryanarayana Rao, said in a press release that Roopa Supriya Fernandes of the same college and Rajeshwari Prabhu B. of TMA Pai College of Education, Udupi, both share the second rank.

Inaugurated

MANGALORE JAN. 6. The CT scan facility was inaugurated by Khurshid Alam, Commissioner of the Healthcare Commission, the U.K., at Omega Hospital here today.

Mr. Alam said the healthcare sector in India is developing at a fast rate. This development has made the West to look at India as a potential place for health tourism, he added.

Wage board for teachers

MYSORE JAN. 6. The Minister of State for Labour, Tanveer Sait, today announced that the Government will shortly notify the constitution of a wage board for teachers in private educational institutions. Speaking to presspersons here today after reviewing development works in the Narasimha Raja Constituency, Mr. Sait said a wage board for teachers is being constituted for the first time in the country. He said that both school and college teachers working in private institutions will be brought under the purview of the wage board. These teachers will also be brought under the purview of the ESI (Employee State Insurance) scheme that will benefit a large number of teachers in private educational institutions. ESI facilities will also be extended to journalists working for small newspapers, he added. About development programmes in his constituency, he said 1,056 houses have been constructed under the Ashraya scheme at Rummanahalli in Rajiv Nagar 3rd Stage and handed over to beneficiaries. As many as 2,200 houses will be built in the area. Using the grant released for Dasara projects, 11 main roads were improved, he added.

`No cut in grant for education'

Udupi Jan. 6. The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, has reportedly assured the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) that there is no proposal to reduce the grants being provided to higher education by 15 per cent. A press release issued by AMUCT here said Mr. Manjunath gave the assurance to a delegation of the AMUCT which met him at Suratkal on Wednesday. According to it, the Minister said the proposal to reduce grants by 15 per cent was made by the previous government, and the coalition government does not propose to reduce the grants. AMUCT submitted a memorandum to Mr. Manjunath, which explained the problems faced by teachers such as delay in disbursal of salaries, the release added.

Govt. studying subsidy issue

Bangalore Jan. 6. The Government is studying the issue of subsidy to Kannada films following a representation from the Kannada Film Producers' Association that there should be a proportionate distribution of subsidy to all Kannada films, according to the Minister for Information, B. Shivaram. The Minister told presspersons here today that the Government is now giving subsidy of Rs. 10 lakhs to 20 Kannada films. The committee concerned is considering films which should granted subsidy. Mr. Shivaram said the Government will continue to run the Kanteerava Studio as no one has come forward to run it. The Government intends to disinvest 70 per cent of its stake. Although the studio has accumulated losses of crores of rupees, it has started earning in the past two years, he added. He said the Karnataka State Film Awards function will be held in Gulbarga, and added that the date is yet to be finalised. Meanwhile, representatives of the film industry segments — distribution, production and theatres — who were to meet the Minister in the morning, have postponed the meeting as they are yet to reach a consensus on a few issues. Mr. Shivaram said he is not aware of what issues the industry wants to discuss, but expressed his desire to meet the leaders of the industry.

Land acquisition: stir planned

BANGALORE JAN. 6. The members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) will stage a dharna in front of the residence of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, here on January 11 demanding steps to help villagers affected by the acquisition of lands for the proposed Arkavathy Layout of the Bangalore Development Authority, G. Murthy Yadav of the KRV said. He said this is in response to the problems that the villagers made known to the vedike. Members of the KRV, led by its president, T.V. Narayanagowda, on Wednesday took out a procession to Dasarahalli, Amruthahalli, Jaggur and Sriramapura villages and heard the problems of those affected by the land acquisition process.

`Krishna has violated protocol'

Bangalore Jan. 6. The former Minister H.N. Nanje Gowda has decided to complain to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, against the Governor of Maharashtra, S.M. Krishna, for his continued interest in political affairs in the State. Speaking to presspersons today, Mr. Nanje Gowda charged Mr. Krishna with defying the Constitution and protocol attached to the office of Governor to indulge in political activities. "It is highly improper on his part to speak like a Congress leader," Mr. Nanje Gowda said. He took exception to the reported defence of the former Commissioner of the Bangalore Development Authority Jayakar Jerome (now Secretary for Minority Affairs) by Mr. Krishna from the premises of the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.

Man accused of killing wife

BIJAPUR JAN. 6. A man allegedly murdered his wife for refusing to have sexual relations with him, at Neelgund village in Badami taluk today. The police gave the name of the dead as Rukmavva Madar (19). The accused, Nagappa Madar, and his mother, Kashavva, have been arrested. It was said that Rukmavva suspected that Nagappa was HIV positive.

JD(S)-Congress tie-up ruled out

Bidar Jan. 6. The Janata Dal (Secular) State unit Vice-President, B.S. Raghunath, said on Thursday that there will be no tie-up between his party and the Congress for the panchayat elections. Mr. Raghunath, who was here to supervise the reorganisation of the Janata Dal (S) in Bidar district, told presspersons that the High Command has sent out the message that the party will fight the elections on its own.

Commemorative stamps

BANGALORE JAN. 6. A set of four commemorative postage stamps on "Indian breeds of dogs" will be issued on January 9. The stamps, information sheets and first-day covers will be available for sale at the General Post Office and head post offices in the State.
