`Collect cess on liquor sold through Defence canteens'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, JAN. 6. Members of the "VeKare Ex-servicemen Trust" (VKET) here have suggested raising Rs. 100 crores for the tsunami relief fund by levying an additional cess on liquor bottles supplied through the department canteens to armed force personnel.

Addressing a press conference here today, the VKET president, M.N. Subramani, said the organisation has appealed to the Armed Force Head Quarters and the Ministry of Defence to look into the feasibility of the idea, which could help generate Rs. 100 crores from serving and retired Defence personnel by levying an additional Rs. 20 on each bottle of liquor sold through the Canteen Stores Depot (CSD) and Unit-run Canteens for three months.

There are nearly 12 lakh Defence personnel and about 20 lakh ex-servicemen, and the marginal increase of Rs. 20 a bottle will help create a huge corpus fund, Mr. Subramani said. This is the easiest way to generate additional funds, he added.
