Five seeds lose

KOLKATA, JAN. 6. Five seeded players were shown the door on Thursday in the pre-quarterfinals of the Sunfeast Championship Series junior tennis here at South Club.

In the girls' section, Andhra Pradesh's V. Nayantara, who is the fourth seed in the under-14 section and the sixth seed in the under-18 category, suffered a double jolt. She lost to un-seeded opponents — Amrita Mukherjee (Bengal, under-14) and Ridhima Borooah (Assam, under-18) — in both the sections.

Local lass Srestha Banerjee beat eighth-seeded Sunaina Sharma (Assam) for the second upset in the under-14 girls' section.

In the boys' under-18 section, seventh-seeded Dharamveer Biswakarma and eighth-seeded Rohit Kumar were also ousted, while Bengal's eighth-seeded Iftekhar Hossain fell to un-seeded State-mate Ayush Dharewa in the under-14 boys' category.
