P. Unni re-elected CPI(M) Palakkad district secretary

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, JAN. 6. The three-day district conference of the CPI(M) which ended here today re-elected P. Unni as the district secretary for the third time.

Though there was an unprecedented fight between the two panels put up by the supporters of the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, and the party State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, the former group got majority of its supporters elected to the 40-member new district committee and the 42-member delegates team to the State conference.

But in the case of the district secretary, both groups reached a last-minute consensus to retain Mr. Unni, who is said to be more close to the Pinarayi faction.

The prominent leaders of the district committee like S. Ajayakumar, MP; district cooperative bank president, P.P. Ummer; the district panchayat vice-president, Mammikutty; the district secretariat member P.K. Sasi; and P.K. Saithalavi of the Mannarkkad area committee were defeated.

The supporters of Mr. Achuthanandan had wrested the control of majority of the 15 area committees, 127 local committees and 2,173 branch committees in the conferences held as a prelude to the district meet earlier.

The conference ended with an impressive march by red volunteers from the Victoria College Ground to the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium. It was followed by a public meeting, which was inaugurated by Mr. Achuthanandan.
