PALAKKAD, JAN. 6. The Ottappalan sub-collector, Dinesh Arora, has begun taking stern action against illegal sand-mining in the Bharathapuzha at Ottapalam, Pattambi and Thrithala. Twelve lorries have been seized for illegally transporting sand. The sub-collector, also the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), has issued orders banning parking of goods-carrying vehicles in the vicinity of sand mining spots (kadavus) before 8 a.m. and after 3 p.m. The order has been issued after receiving a report from the tahsildar of Ottappalam that lorries are parked in the vicinity of kadavus after the normal mining hours. Sand is illegally mined even after the mining hours. The order says that many people have complained that on account of the parking of vehicles, women who take bath in the river have problems. The ban will become effective from January 10.
