KANNUR, JAN. 6. The Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) general secretary, K. Pankajakshan, has alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre is deviating from the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the alliance. ``The assessment of the Left parties that have offered support to the UPA Government is that the time has come for them to make a fresh evaluation of their support as the Government has started deviating from the CMP,'' Mr. Pankajakshan said at a press conference here today. Though the RSP had its own reservations about extending support to a Government-led by the Congress which had introduced fresh economic policies, the party extended its support to the Congress-led UPA Government on the basis of the assurance of the party that it would correct aberrations in its earlier policies. The RSP leader said the implementation of the Patents Act and many other policy decisions of the UPA Government were found detrimental to the interests of the common man. The party's national conference scheduled to be held in Pondicherry will discuss these issues, he said.
State conference
The party State secretary, T.J. Chandrachoodan, who was present, said the party State conference which began here today would deliberate on the political and organisational issues in the State. The four-day meet is being organised at a time when the dream of Left unity has reached a phase of its progress. The delegates' session will be inaugurated on January 7. The party, he said, will continue to mobilise public agitations against the `unethical and anti-democratic' political approaches of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government in the State. The UDF has nominated P.J. Kurien who is facing a sex abuse case as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha byelection in the State. The Government should intervene to get the Supreme Court stay on the case vacated, he added.
On new Minister
Referring to the resignation of P.K. Kunhalikutty as Minister, Prof. Chandrachoodan said the new Minister selected by the Indian Union Muslim League to replace Mr. Kunhalikutty would be a `remote control' Minister. The IUML has even denied the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, his Constitutional right to assign portfolios to his Ministers, he added. The Government's inefficiency is exposed in its handling of relief measures in tsunami-hit areas in the State. Relief camps are controlled by Congress workers and the Government machinery is being misused. He flayed the Government's decision to increase the members of the Public Service Commission. The PSC has been turned into a UDF body, he added.
