Pondicherry

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 6. The Directorate of School Education has ordered that all government schools in Pondicherry and Karaikal reopen on January 10. The Director of Education, G. Theva Needhi Dhas, said in a release on Tuesday that it was originally planned to reopen schools on January 17 after postponing the half-yearly examinations in the two regions. The examinations were slated to be held from December 27 to 31. With the Government extending relief and arranging for rehabilitation of the tsunami-affected people, the second term holidays had now been curtailed and consequently government schools would reopen on January 10. The Deputy Director of Education (Women) in Pondicherry and Chief Educational Officer of Karaikal will however issue orders separately as far as schools (where relief camps were set up) were concerned. Inspecting Officers would conduct special coaching and counselling for children of families affected by the catastrophe in the relief camps and in the schools. The students appearing for public examinations (standards X and XII) will attend special classes during the second term holidays.
