Constable saves MLA from tsunami

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry. Jan. 6. An alert police constable, C. Dayalan, saved DMK legislator and former Pondicherry Health Minister, Nazeem, from being swept away by the tsunami near Karaikal on December 26.

The legislator was reportedly taking a walk close to the sea when the policeman alerted him to the tsunami threat.

The IG of Police, P. R. Meena, told a press conference here today that when the tsunami struck Pondicherry and Karaikal, the entire police force was put on alert to handle evacuation, rescue, and distribution of relief.

The police acted swiftly to evacuate as many as 70,000 people to around 50 relief centres in the two regions.

Review of work

Reviewing the working of the police in 2004, Mr. Meena said effective policing was responsible for the fall in crimes, including heinous offences here. No case of dacoity was reported in any part of the Union Territory during last year, he said.

There was a spurt in the theft of motorcycles, but the rate of detection was high. Out of 320 motor vehicles stolen, 181 vehicles were recovered last year.

The fine imposed for violation of traffic rules amounted to Rs.17,27,985 in 2004 against Rs.7.45 lakhs in the preceding year.

He said that all police stations had opened "mahila desks" (women's sections) to handle eve-teasing cases. Villianoor in Pondicherry and Karaikal region would soon have one all women police station each to deal with crimes against women.

A centrally sponsored India Reserve Battalion would be launched soon; 1007 police constables and sub- inspectors would be posted for the battalion, he said. The IG said that a proposal for modernisation of the police force at an outlay of Rs 8.4 crores had been sent to the government. If cleared, this would enable the department to form a bomb disposal squad, procure traffic management equipment, modern arms and ammunition, wireless sets, computers and help build new police stations
