`Use new methods for seawall building'

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 6. The Kerala Government Contractors' Association State president, Varghese Kannambally, has demanded that the seawall construction techniques be revised so as to withstand the onslaught of tsunamis.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Kannambilly said the Government should seek the help of experts and research houses for revising the techniques. In order to withstand tsunamis, rocks of a minimum size of 70 cm length, 60 cm breadth and 50 cm thickness should be used. ``But such rocks are not available in government-recognised quarries in the State,'' he said.

Mr. Kannambilly said the Government should take steps to ensure the availability of such rocks. Experienced contractors in the State are staying away from the construction of seawalls because of the failure of the Government to disburse arrears due to them. Several contractors who got contracts for the construction of seawalls have stopped the works halfway because of the non-availability of funds.

He said the Government should take steps to distribute arrears and make them complete the works.
