MALAPPURAM, JAN. 6. A three-day national conference on `Redefining folklore', organised under the auspices of the Folklore Project, Centre for Folklore Studies, Calicut University, in collaboration with the South Zone Cultural Centre at Thanjavur began on the university campus here today. The Calicut University Vice-Chancellor, Syed Iqbal Hasnain, inaugurated the conference. Jawaharlal Handoo, president, Indian Folklore Congress, delivered the keynote address. The Folklore Project director, Raghavan Payyanad, presided over the inaugural session. The meet is an attempt to understand the role played by folklore in the past and to try and define its role in the contemporary socio-political milieu. Scholars and researchers will participate in debates on various aspects of this issue to be held in nine sessions. Two sessions on history of folklore and folklore as data were held today. The speakers discussed how people used the data of folklore around the world to propagate new ideologies that even resulted in a globalised socio-political situation. It was also argued that folklore could be used as an effective weapon to resist the perils of post-modernity.
