Provident Fund relief

CHENNAI JAN. 6. The Employees Provident Fund Organisation has made arrangements for immediate relief to EPF subscribers or their families affected by the tsunami.

According to a release by the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner here, the affected subscribers/family members can contact their employers and commissioners of EPFO offices in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry for further assistance.

Subscribers who have lost property, movable or immovable, will have to submit form 31 while the nominees/legal heirs of the deceased subscribers have to submit forms 20, 5(IF) and 10 D.

For establishments falling under the jurisdiction of regional office, Chennai and Pondicherry, the affected subscribers may contact S.D. Prasad, RPF Commissioner, Royapettah High Road, Chennai - 600 014, the release said.

Free degree certificates

CHENNAI JAN. 6. The University of Madras will issue duplicate degree, diploma certificates and statement of marks free to students who lost the original in the tsunami disaster.

Those desirous of getting the duplicate copy of testimonials should apply to the Registrar, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai. The principals of the colleges in which they studied should forward their applications. The students of distance education programme should apply to the Director, Institute of Distance Education, Chepauk, Chennai, giving details such as year of study, degree and enrolment number, a release said.

Vaiko helps distribute aid

CHENNAI JAN. 6. The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, Vaiko, today facilitated distribution of aid brought from Karnataka by a non-Governmental organisation at three fishermen's colonies here.

The head of the Adichunchungiri Math, Bala Gangadaranatha Swami, and representatives from the Karnataka Jeevan Vigyan Academy and Sree Jain Swetamba Terapanthi Mahila Mandal, Bangalore, had brought rice and other relief material.

Mr. Vaiko said that as the Police Commissioner had warned against distribution of aid in the city, the MDMK was facilitating this.

The aim was that the aid reached the needy in their hour of need.

Nearly 11,000 families were given rice bags in Nochikuppam, Srinivasapuram and Besant Nagar.

They were also given kits comprising of a saree/dhoti, plate and glass.

The NGO will also distribute in Kanyakumari.

AIADMK official replaced

CHENNAI JAN. 6. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today announced the removal of M.G. Srinivasan from the post of district secretary of the party's Nilgris unit.

In a statement here, she said K. Anandakrishnan had been appointed as the new district secretary.

She appealed to party activists to extend their cooperation to him.

Gang storms police station

SALEM JAN. 6. A group of men stormed into the Sooramangalam police station this evening and secured the release of a person who was detained there.

The police said Ananthan was detained on the charge of selling IMFL liquor in his teashop without valid licence.

While the police were interrogating him, the group, which came in a car, entered the station and after manhandling the personnel took Ananthan away.

Later, a special team arrested Subramany on charges of storming into the police station to secure the release of the detained person.

Cases under Section 353 and 220 of IPC were registered against him.

Special trains for Pongal

CHENNAI JAN. 6. In connection with Pongal holidays, Southern Railway is to run the following special trains.

Train 0618 Bangalore-Chennai Central special will leave Bangalore at 9.30 p.m. on January 13 and arrive here at 4.35 a.m. the next day.

In the return direction, train 0617 Chennai Central-Bangalore special will leave Central at 10.50 p.m. on January 16 and reach Bangalore at 7.40 a.m. the next day.

Train 0647 Bangalore-Nagercoil special will leave Bangalore at 5.45 p.m. on January 12 and reach Nagercoil at 10 a.m. the next day.

In the return direction it will leave Nagercoil at 3.30 p.m. on January 16 and reach Bangalore at 9 a.m. the next day.

It will run via Hosur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai and Tirunelveli.

The specials will have two AC three-tier, seven sleeper, two general second class and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Advance reservation is available.

Rescued

Dharmapuri Jan. 6. Ten child labourers working in hotels and automobile workshops were rescued in a raid near here today. According to official sources, a team conducted raids in eight units. The children will be admitted to special schools. Action has been initiated against these units.

Shutters down

ERODE JAN. 6 . Opposing the Government's proposal to close the Sub-Registrar's Office at Sivagiri here, the public brought down the shutters of all the 200-and-odd shops today. The office, proposed to be merged with the Erode Sub-Registrar Office, had been functioning for the past 40 years, they said. Both morning and noon shows were cancelled in cinema halls. However, schools functioned and buses plied as usual.

Burgled

ERODE JAN. 6 . Cash and 20 sovereigns of jewels were burgled from the house of a dentist here on Wednesday. According to the police, Sivanthi Rajan (30), and his wife, Lakshmi Prabha, also a dentist, reside on Annamalai Street. The couple was said to have stayed at another house nearby with their children, when the incident occurred. Today morning, when Mr. Rajan returned to his house, he found the doors broken open, and jewels and Rs. 80,000 missing.

Fatal fall

Dharmapuri Jan. 6 . A farmer had a fatal fall into an irrigation well at Thoppur here on Wednesday. According to the police, Seerangan (55) repairing a motor pump in the well slipped and fell. He died on the spot.

No power

In view of shutdown of the Dharmapuri sub-station due to monthly maintenance work, power supply will be disrupted in the following areas on January 8: Dharmapuri town, Old Dharmapuri, Pidamaneri, Annasagaram, Noolahalli, Kadakathur, Rajapet, Solakottai, Krishnapuram and surrounding areas.

Chain stolen

TUTICORIN JAN. 6. Burglars stole a two-sovereign chain from the house of a woman, Arumugalakshmi, in Kovilpatti on the wee hours of Thursday. The theft occurred while the woman was asleep, said the police who have registered a case and are investigating.

Three held

TUTICORIN JAN. 6. The Thattaparai police arrested three persons on a charge of stealing an iron pipe kept inside an ice factory on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the 22-feet-long stolen iron pipe was recovered from the threesome — Perumal, Pachaiperumal and Dhanabal, who were later remanded to judicial custody.

Man arrested

TUTICORIN JAN. 6. Police arrested on Tuesday a 45-year-old man, Harichandran, for allegedly raping a 33-year-old woman on Dec 31.

Police said Harichandran had raped the woman at her house in Nazareth.

He was remanded under Section 376 of IPC.
