SHGs to be involved in total literacy campaign

HYDERABAD, JAN. 6. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that five lakh women members of the self-help groups will be involved in the total literacy campaign in the State.

Inaugurating a three-day international seminar on `Education for all' implementation, organised by the UNESCO here today, Dr. Reddy said methodological and language issues were being dealt with to improve easier access, acceptability and retention of learning.

He said despite achieving 99 per cent enrolment, there were 4.4 lakh children out of the schools who were working for their family's living. The Government was successful in tackling the problem by involving non-governmental organisations. "The vicious cycle of poverty must be broken and education was the easiest and least controversial way of doing so," he pointed out.

The Chief Minister said 94 residential schools for the girls would be opened this year. He said more Muslim agencies should come forward to provide education to girls of the community. He said education for tribals was also high on the Government agenda. "As tribal children do not speak Telugu, use of tribal languages has been stressed by developing specific curricula and methodologies," he added.

Private sector role

Dr. Reddy welcomed private sector participation in education. As private schools offered more disciplined teachers and quality education, the Government system needed to be upgraded and reoriented to suit public demands. The Government was planning to strengthen English medium education in its school, he said.

Delegates from Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, China and Mozambique are attending the seminar.
