Two convicted in MAMC gang rape case

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 6. A Delhi court today convicted two persons in the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) gang rape case in which a student of the college was sexually assaulted in broad daylight on the terrace of a Mughal monument in Central Delhi in 2002.

Convicting the two, the main accused in the case, Rahul, and his co-accused, Amit, the Additional Sessions Judge, Chander Shekhar, said that the prosecution had been able to prove the guilt of the two beyond all reasonable doubts.

The court held the two guilty under Section 376 (2) (g) (gang-rape), 392 (robbing the mobile phone of the victim) and 397 (robbery with attempt to cause grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

However, the judge acquitted two other accused, Ashok, of the charge of harbouring the accused, and Mohan Lal of the charge dishonestly receiving stolen property from the accused saying that the prosecution had not been able to prove the charges against them.

There were six accused in the case two of whom were juvenile. The juvenile accused had pleaded guilty before a juvenile justice court in 2003, and they had been sent to a remand home where they will stay till they attain adulthood. Later, the court fixed January 17 as the date for argument on the quantum of sentence to be awarded to the two convicts.
