Fulfilling a soldier's dream

By Kanwar Yogendra

SHIMLA, JAN.6. A Military Cross earned by late Brigadier M.R. Dutt in World War II was presented by his family to the 6th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles in a simple but rare ceremony here today. Fulfilling the desire of her late husband, Mrs. Kaushalya Dutt presented the Military Cross received by Brigadier Dutt as a Second Lieutenant in 1948 to his parent Battalion.

A silver trophy in his memory and a few tennis racquets of the late Brigadier, who was an ace tennis player, was also gifted to the Battalion in a touching ceremony by his family.

Highlighting the rare achievements of the late Brigadier, Colonel G.S. Mann the present Commanding Officer informed that the Rajputana Rifles under the leadership Brigadier Dutt was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar in November 1947. It marched onto Baramulla-Uri and, in July 1948, in a fierce battle captured the Darapari Hill. The Battle Honour for `Darapri Hill' was conferred upon this Battalion during 1947-48 operations against the Pakistan-sponsored tribal invasion of Kashmir.

During the same period, the Battalion achieved one spectacular success after another until the final eviction of the tribals from Kashmir by the Indian Army. The actions in Tithwal Sector crowned by the ferocious victory on Darapari Hill were the defining moment for the Battalion which so characterise the Indian Army. In this action, CHM Piru Singh immortalized himself by his indomitable courage and was awarded country's highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra posthumously, said Colonel Mann while tracing the history of his Battalion.

The Brigadier, who had himself, graced the Battle Honour Day celebrations in 2003 passed away last year in April at his residence in Shimla. Brigadier Dutt was the elder brother of famous film star late Uttpal Dutt.
