Vyas Samman for `Kathgulab'

New Delhi Jan. 6. `Kathgulab', a novel by well-known Hindi fiction writer Mridula Garg, has been chosen for the prestigious Vyas Samman for 2004, the K.K. Birla Foundation announced here today.

The award, carrying an amount of Rs. 2.50 lakhs, is given to an outstanding literary work in Hindi authored by an Indian citizen and published during the last ten years.

The Kolkata-born author's novel, translated into English under the title `Country of Goodbyes', was chosen for the 14th Vyas Samman by a selection committee headed by eminent Hindi litterateur Satya Prakash Mishra, a release from the Foundation said.

The earlier winners of the award include Dharamvir Bharati, Kunwar Narayan, Srilal Shukla and Giriraj Kishore.

Art exhibition opened

NEW DELHI JAN. 6. The former Union Minister, Maneka Gandhi, today inaugurated the four-day "The Society Collection" -- which is the country's foremost exhibition of arts, crafts and artefacts -- at the Asiad Village here.

Being held for the first time in the Capital, the highlight of the "The Society Collection" is its handpicked crafts like Bastar tribal handicrafts, pottery, paintings and hand embroidered and woven saris made by artists and craftsmen from Bastar, Jaipur, Lucknow, Agra, Kutch and Bhilai.

New PNB scheme

NEW DELHI JAN. 6. The Punjab National Bank (PNB) today launched its `PNB spectrum fixed deposit scheme', which is an all-in-one fixed deposit product and replaces the existing five FD Schemes including Ordinary FD, special FD, Vaarshik Aay Yojana, Multi Benefit FD and Anupam FD schemes.Launching the scheme, chief managing director, PNB, S.S. Kohli, said this new product is well suited to all the needs of customers and it offers an in-built overdraft facility that can be enjoyed 24X7X365 basis by writing a cheque as well as with the help of debit- cum-ATM cards.
