MYSORE, JAN. 6. The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, will launch the e-Learning site of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) here on Saturday. In a press release issued here, G.L. Shekar, Special Officer, VTU's e-Learning Centre, said the centre had developed a web site in which all the satellite-based and web-based content will be deployed so that any student from any part of the world can access content at any time. In this initiative, the VTU will make video-based lecture and e-Learning courseware available on the web free of charge to any learner. The courseware includes material such as lecture notes, course outlines, reading lists and assignments and quizzes, he said. The centre was established in August 2003 on the SJCE Campus in Mysore and is facilitating distance education and training to students and faculty of the VTU through satellite and web. The centre has collected and processed 120 sessions of lectures of four engineering subjects - DSP, Strength of Materials, Mathematics-III, and Operating Systems. Three content developers, including Mysore's ExcelSoft, have generated high quality digital interactive e-Learning content, Dr. Shekar said. He said the satellite-based education comes under the ambit of the EDUSAT project of ISRO. As part of the first phase of the VTU-EDUSAT project, a pilot project using INSAT-3A Ku-Band transponder has been implemented. With the networking of 100 engineering colleges across the State, VTU has become the single largest connected university in India. The site will be inaugurated at 10.30 a.m. at Hotel Paradise. S. Prabhakaran, Adviser, EDUSAT, ISRO, Bangalore; and H. Dhananjaya, Director, Technical, JSS Mahavidyapeetha; will be the guests of honour. K. Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of VTU, will preside over the function. M. Shivakumar, Registrar, will be present.
