National meet from tomorrow

HYDERABAD, JAN. 6. The Golden Jubilee edition of the senior National ball badminton meet will be conducted at the Railway grounds from January 8 to 12. Since the Hyderabad State Ball Badminton Association is a founder-member of the Ball Badminton Federation of India, it was given the honour of hosting this special edition. This is the seventh time the city will be holding the meet.

As many as 25 teams, including defending champions Tamil Nadu (men) and Kerala (women), will be taking part. The Minister for Panchayat Raj, J. C. Divakar Reddy, will inaugurate the championship while K. Jana Reddy, Home Minister, will be the chief guest at the valedictory function.

To commemorate the event, around 500 players and officials took part in a rally from Secunderabad YMCA — venue of the first senior National in 1955 — to the Railway grounds on Thursday morning.

Vijaya Prasad Reddy, secretary of the organising committee, informed that many top players of the sport have been conferred with Arjuna Awards, Andhra's J. Pitchaiah receiving the honour in 1970. — Our Sports Reporter
