KOLLAM, JAN. 6. Though the CPI(M) leader, V.S. Achuthanandan, did not attend the three-day Kollam district conference of the CPI(M) which began here on January 4, it is the faction led by him in the party that has gained majority in the new district committee of the party which was `unanimously' elected today. K. Rajagopal, was re-elected district secretary as expected. Interestingly, the party State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, who inaugurated the conference was present at the venue on all the three days. The development was in sharp contrast to the general expectations that the Pinarayi group had the chances of dominating the 43-member new district committee. The earlier committee was weighed in favour of the Pinarayi group. But the interesting aspect about the outcome of today's election is that except for two new faces, the rest were in the earlier committee. The omission of the CITU district secretary, P. Keshavan Nair, from the new committee is seen as a major development. Sources said he was dropped for authoring two books, which went against the spirit of the party. Jayadevan Pillai from the Karunagappally area committee was also dropped owing to bad health. One of the new entrant to the committee is X. Earnest. He is the secretary of the Kollam East area committee of the party and was an invitee to the previous district committee. Mr. Earnest also functioned as the secretary of the conference reception committee. But the secretary of the Kollam area committee of the party, K. Thankappan, was not included in the new district committee. Mr. Thankappan was included only as an invitee. P. Unni is CPI(M) Palakkad district secretary Page 5
