Weightlifting
CHENNAI, JAN. 6. G. Veerabadran of ICF and R. Kalidass of Southern Railway won their respective weight categories to give the southern region an inspiring start in the all-India inter-Railway weightlifting championship which got underway here on Thursday. Veerabadran provided the host a perfect start by finishing first in the 56kg category. His snatch actually was lesser than the second placed Vinoth Kumar of Southern Railway but made it up with a good lift in the clean and jerk. For R. Kalidass, a gold medallist in the commonwealth championship, it was a come-from-behind effort to win the gold in the 69kg category. Down by over 10 kg to North Central's Raj Kumar in the snatch event, Kalidass showed his prowess in clean and jerk. The day's third winner was veteran A.K. Pandian, who has several international successes to his credit.
