THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 6. Activists of the Prathikarana Vedi picketed the Mangalapuram Grama Panchayat office today in protest against the granting of licence to a private company to run a clay purification factory. The Plachimada Aikyadhardya Samithy convenor, R. Ajayan, who inaugurated the picketing said that mining operations that had become rampant in Mangalapuram, Andoorkonam and Azhoor panchayats had deprived local residents of the right to lead a peaceful life. As many as 5,000 school children suffer from respiratory diseases here. The elderly are no exception. Unbridled mining operations were posing a threat to their existence, Mr. Ajayan said. The Vedi State president, M.A. Latheef, who addressed the protestors, demanded that the panchayat rescinds the decision to issue licence to the company that was functioning in violation of Government norms. The panchayat had taken the decision ignoring the woes of residents, he said. Case registered The State Human Rights Commission has registered a case against the company. The panchayat has deprived local residents of their constitutional right for peaceful living. Environment activists Medha Patkar and Sunderlal Bahuguna and novelist Arundhati Roy would visit Mangalapuram this month, Mr. Latheef said. The picketing began at 10.30 a.m. The protestors were arrested and removed by the police at 1 p.m. The Solidarity Youth Movement secretary, Sunil Hassan, the panchayat members K.S. Ajith Kumar, Prabha Rajendran, and Soman Nair were there among those who addressed the protestors.
