Mahila Congress forms panel for relief work

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 6. The All-India Mahila Congress has formed a State coordination committee to execute relief works in tsunami-ravaged areas in Tamil Nadu.

The 13-member committee, headed by the party MP, K. Rani, apart from collecting relief materials from the public will tour the affected areas for distributing the relief materials. The Mahila Congress has already handed over a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh to the relief fund, according to Kamalakshi Sharma, secretary of the All-India Mahila Congress.

Ms. Kamalakshi said that during her tour of the affected districts, she found the victims wanted the Government to take steps to enable them resume their normal activities.

Meanwhile, groupism has not spared the women's wing of the party also. Women members of the party protested the appointment of Gayathri Devi, as the acting president of the State unit of the Mahila Congress.

Women workers, condemning the nomination, raised slogans against the new president. Charging that a ``non-party member'' had been made the president, they said she was appointed with the knowledge of the State unit of the party.

Asked about the charges, Ms. Kamalakshi said a consensus could not be reached and hence the All-India Mahila Congress president, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, appointed Ms. Gayatri Devi as the acting president. She assured the ``protesting'' party members that a senior party worker would soon be appointed as the president of the mahila unit of the party.
