CHENNAI, JAN. 6. Airtel, one of the leading mobile service providers, today launched a new concept to its prepaid customers in the city. Under the new plan, the service provider offered a single tariff as well as while roaming in the Tamil Nadu Telecom circle, on all outgoing calls and messages. According to M. Raghunath Mandava, vice-president (operations), Bharti Cellular Limited, Chennai, the new plan was an attempt to simplify communication for an increasing number of people travelling regularly from Chennai to other parts of the State. Calls to landlines in Chennai and Tamil Nadu will be charged at single rate of Rs. 2 per minute and the STD calls to rest of India will be charged at Rs. 3 per minute. These will be applicable while calling from Chennai as well as Tamil Nadu. A nominal daily rental of Re. 1 would be levied, under this plan. All incoming calls while roaming in Tamil Nadu would be charged at Rs.1.50 per minute as against the normal tariff of Rs.5.45. The benefit of unified charges would be extended to messages also which would be charged at Rs. 0.50 for any SMS to Chennai and Tamil Nadu mobiles, both while in Chennai and in Tamil Nadu. A charge of Rs. 2 per message would be levied for any national SMS. The new prepaid plan is offered through a start-up kit priced at Rs. 199, with Rs. 50 worth of talk-time and a 15-day validity period.
