Tutor gets RI for killing pupil

A tutor who had kidnapped and killed his eight-year-old student two years ago has been awarded rigorous life imprisonment by the Bidar district court. A similar punishment has also been awarded to his associate. The Additional Principal and Sessions judge, N.K. Sudheendra Rao, found Shantkumar Vishwanath guilty of kidnapping Sangamesh Biradar from his school for ransom and later killing him. The judge also found that Veerendra Bhangure was equally guilty and carried out the crime with "similar intentions" as that of Shantkumar Vishwanath. The Market police had filed a chargesheet saying that the two had lied to the victim's school principal and abducted him. They had taken him to the forest on the outskirts of Bidar and called his parents demanding a ransom of Rs. 5 lakhs. But they killed the boy before his parents could react to their demand. Shantkumar Vishwanath has been asked to pay Rs. 12,000 as fine failing which he will have to undergo an additional simple imprisonment of nine months. Veerendra Bhangure has been fined Rs. 2,000 and if he failed to pay it, he will have to undergo an additional simple imprisonment of three months. Shantkumar Vishwanath had escaped from the district jail recently and was arrested by Bidar police in Maharashtra.
FORENSICON 2005 from Saturday

The Department of Forensic Medicine, Father Muller Medical College, is hosting FORENSICON 2005 the 13th annual conference of Karnataka Medico-Legal Society on the college premises here from Saturday. This is an exclusive conference in forensic medicine, toxicology and allied specialities, including judiciary and law, a press release from Udaykumar K., organising secretary of the conference, here said. More than 100 delegates from all over the State and also from Kerala and Goa will participate in the two-day conference. Eminent speakers from different parts of the country will deliver talks on different aspects of the subject. The event is being held as part of the post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations of Father Muller Charitable Institutions. The Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, Aloysius Paul D'Souza, will inaugurate the conference. The Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao will be the chief guest.
Man dies in road accident

A man was killed and two were injured when a goods van by which they were travelling hit the avenue trees on the Tiptur-Arsikere Road in Tiptur town on Thursday. The police said that the van, driven by Gangadhar, was going at high speed when the accident occurred at the Madihalli Gate in the town. Thimmappa (60) of Garugadahalli in Nagamangala taluk of Mandya district, who was travelling by the van, died on the spot. Gangadhar and Mahadev, cleaner of the van, suffered injuries. They have been admitted to a hospital at Tiptur. The police have registered a case.
Kadri Manjunatha Temple fair

The annual nine-day fair of Sri Manjunatha Temple at Kadri here from January 14. Thanks to the initiative of Mallika Kala Vrinda, Kadri, people will get the opportunity to witness a variety of cultural programmes performed by 55 troupes, comprising 1,500 artistes of repute from throughout the State. Sudhakar Rao Pejavar, vrinda working president, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the vrindra has been organising such programmes at Srikshetra Kadri since its inception in 1950. He said the cultural programmes went alongside the various religious programmes organised by the management of the temple in connection with the annual fair. The cultural programmes lined up for this year include bala, yuva and mahila prathibotsavas, yakshagana, mythological and historical drama, nrithyotsava, harikatha, magic shows, dasarageethe, Bhagavad Gita recitation competition, and yogasana performance. Artistes will be honoured at the Suvarna Kalajyothi programme to be held every Monday at 6 p.m. Mr. Rao said the organisers will honour senior artistes and also recognise junior artistes during the festival. He said artistes who had performed on stage provided by the vrinda in the past had risen to great stature at the State, national and international level, he said.
