VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 6. The Tumallapallivari Kalakshetram will get a facelift at a cost of Rs 30 lakhs for hosting the Nandi Natakotsavalu-2005 to commence in the city on January 18. The renovation process would include installation of a central air-conditioned system, remodel of the acoustic system, besides improvement of the seating and toilet facilities at the auditorium, the municipal commissioner, V.Usha Rani, told reporters here on Friday. She said efforts were on to complete the renovation work by January 12, and expressed the hope that the renovated auditorium would be on a par with Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad. She said the corporation had decided to take up the renovation work of the auditorium in a big way, as for the first time during the last 25 years, such a major cultural event involving over 600 artistes was being held outside Hyderabad.
Sanitation drive
Ms.Rani said the corporation had decided to take up a door-to-door sanitation campaign in the city during the next couple of days. During the campaign, awareness would be created among the general public with the help of corporators and municipal officials on the need to maintain two dustbins at each household. Residents would be advised to maintain a green and red dustbin at their houses. While the green bin would have to be used for dumping organic matter, the red bin was meant for inorganic waste. The commissioner who earlier in the day held a meeting with bankers said she had requested them to provide financial linkages to about 5000-odd self-help groups.
