VIJAYAWADA, JAN.6. Activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxists (CPI-M) staged a dharna in front of the Sub-Collector's office here on Thursday in protest against the alleged murderous attack on three of its activists by some "vested interests" at Peddatummidi village of Bantumilli mandal in Krishna district. The three victims -- N. Pullaiah, district secretary of the Struggle Committee Against Caste Discrimination and the party's Bantumilli mandal secretaries, P. Mohan Rao and V. Raju -- were attacked on Wednesday allegedly by an armed gang of about 50 persons.
Blaming landlords
According to the party, the attack was carried out at the instigation of two landlords, B. Radhakrishna and B. Ravi. The trio suffered serious injuries. The victims had been admitted to the Machilipatnam Government Hospital. According to the CPI(M) leaders, the attack was a sequel to the campaign launched by the victims in the mandal against the land grabbing activities of the accused who reportedly "usurped over 1,000 acres of land" of the Government, Dalits and other backward sections. Following a public outcry, the two landlords were arrested a few months ago. The accused, who were recently released on bail orchestrated the attack, the party alleged.
Police protection sought
According to the party leaders, the police "failed to take any steps" to prevent the attack or nab the culprits after the offence. The CPI(M) district president, V. Uma Maheswara Rao, the city secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, and other leaders, who staged the dharna, later submitted a memorandum to the District Collector seeking action against the accused.
