By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, JAN.6. The Municipal Corporation of Vijayawada has decided to set up five more eSeva centres in the city to improve interface with citizens and mop up tax collection. Discussions were held with the Andhra Pradesh Technological Services (APTS) and the corporation recently in Hyderabad during which the issue was taken up. The new eSeva centres would be in addition to the nine such centres already functioning in the city. The 10th centre would be inaugurated shortly at Chittinagar, the Municipal Commissioner, V. Usha Rani, told reporters here on Thursday. Ms. Rani who attended the two-day conference of district Collectors and municipal commissioners in Hyderabad on January 4 and 5, which was chaired by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the State Government had agreed to extend the deadline for collection of taxes by the civic corporations till January 31. She appealed to the citizens to pay the arrears which had shot up Rs 18 crores in the city. She announced that the time' schedule of the four Citizens Service Centres in the city had been changed to operate from 7.30 am to 8 p.m, to enable officer-goers and others to make payment of the taxes at their convenient time. The commissioner said the programme would be launched in the city on January 9 during which special emphasis would be laid on improving civic amenities and employment opportunities for those living in the slum areas. Various employment opportunities for the jobless under the CMEY and DWCRA scheme would be taken up during the special programme, she said. She denied inferences that the move to involve the district Collectors in the administration of civic affairs would overlap the functioning of municipal commissioners. The directive was mainly intended to ensure better coordination between the two officials, she added.
