Fatima Nagar lane key to development

By Ramesh Susarla

GUNTUR, JAN. 6. Situated between two railway level crossings in the city, for the 49th division of the Guntur Municipal Corporation, formation of the `Zero Lane' in the Fatima Nagar is key to development.

This `Zero Lane' running along the railway track has been the dream of people, as it can provide easy access to several localities without having to negotiate the busy roads in Pattabhipuram. The only hurdle in the formation of the road is payment of compensation to 27 plot-owners, which is likely to cost Rs.55 lakhs.

Talks are in progress between the plot-owners and the GMC, but they have not reached an agreement so far. The ward lacks greenery with majority of the plots being very small and the entire extent covered with concrete constructions. Several roads and culverts, laid in the division at a cost of Rs.1.2 crores, have made some of the areas like Ankamma Nagar and Fatima Nagar presentable.

Internal roads needed

Several internal roads still need to be laid in Gandhi Nagar, which is a slum area though not identified as one. The Rs.33-lakh DFID project has proved a boon for Fatima Nagar, providing it with quality cement roads. The main grouse of the people in the division is non-clearance of garbage for days together and at times it extends to a week also.

At many places, BT roads laid long ago, are getting damaged due to overflowing of drains with sewage. These two factors need immediate attention, but the pleas of the corporator and the people have fallen on deaf ears of the GMC officials.

Half of the roads were not usable due to the GMC officials' apathy.

Water supply also needs immediate attention in Fatima Nagar close to the church.

There is no pressure in the pipelines and the newly-laid line in Gandhi Nagar is yet to be tested. While Ankamma Nagar and Fatima Nagar have been identified as slums, they do not meet the conditions laid out in the provisions for sanctioning housing schemes there.
