City police to have a new zone

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 6. A massive exercise to reorganise the entire jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate, including constitution of a new zone by dividing the South zone into Southeast and Southwest zones, was kicked off by the city police.

Realignment of localities among various police stations and police stations with divisions would be a crucial part of the revamp, the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V. Dinesh Reddy, told a press conference on Thursday. "This, we hope, will help us serve people better," he said.

He appealed to people to submit their suggestions, either oral or written, at police stations, to the local Assistant Commissioners of Police or the Deputy Commissioners of Police with regard to relocation of their localities with nearby or adjoining police stations. A decision would be taken after reviewing the feedback. However, he made it clear that no new police station would be created.

All the 20 police stations located on the other side of the Moosi, in and around the old city, would be allocated to the Southeast and Southwest zones. The Central zone would be stripped off five of its nine police stations. "This done, the zone will have four police stations, comprising important locations like Assembly and Secretariat, so that security arrangements are taken care of," Mr. Reddy explained.

The five police stations deleted from the Central zone would be distributed among East, North and West zones.

`Striking force'

Announcing a host of other measures, the Commissioner said that each of the 13 Law and Order ACPs would be provided with a `striking force' unit possessing riot gear and arms. Separate four-wheeler would be arranged for each unit. Rakshak teams would be strengthened by posting able men and providing riot gear. In order to make effective use of Rakshak and Blue Colt teams, the technology of Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) would be introduced. Traffic wing would be given 15 Bolero vehicles for better management of vehicular movement. An ambulance would also be given to them to shift accident victims to hospitals.

Communication network

As many as 200 high-frequency communication sets would be provide to the newly created sub-control rooms. This would help sub-control rooms' network with the police station concerned. It was decided to abolish all the existing Maitri and peace committees and reconstitute them with new members in the backdrop of some complaints against the dubious nature of some members. Fresh lists would be announced by January 15. Specific time frame would be fixed for issuing all types of documents like the copy of First Information Report at police stations. Efforts would be made to return seized properties lying in police stations to the court and in turn to the original owners.

A separate wing, led by an Inspector, would be set up in Task Force cell to monitor activities of religious terrorist organisations on the lines of Counter Intelligence. Special equipment and gadgets would be arranged for the wing.
