dated January 8, 1955: Conquest of space

Mr. Peter Masfield, Chief Executive of the British European Airways, has forecast the conquest of space in a few years time. Speaking at the Royal Aeronautical Society's annual lecture in London on January 6, Mr. Masfield said: "It is not at all that far ahead when one looks to what has already been accomplished." He told his young listeners that the aircraft of tomorrow might take off vertically from city centres up circular chutes to overcome the growing problem of noise.
