Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the editorial, "Beyond Harry Potter" (Dec. 30, 2004). J.K. Rowling's phenomenal rise as a best-selling fiction writer is amazing. The rise of the esoteric in the entertainment media indicates the emergence of a new form of Gothic fiction, where magic science and high-tech devices produce what we want to read or see. The Rowling phenomenon over which the editorial goes gaga occurred in old Sanskrit and Pali literature too Panchatantra and Jataka Tales and in Persian and Urdu literature in the form of Hatim Tai, Alif Laila and Sindbad Stories. I wish the editorial had projected a proper theoretical perspective rather than eulogising the West.
