Iraqi children arriving today for heart surgery

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JAN. 7. Six children, suffering from congenital heart disease, will arrive at Manipal Heart Foundation here on Saturday to undergo heart surgery.

The youngest is 11 months and the oldest is 11 years.

Brothers Together, charity organisation based in Amman, Jordan, dedicated to helping children in need has sponsored their visit and the Iraqi Ministry of Health has contributed towards their food expenses.

The hospital is offering free surgery and treatment.

"Manipal Heart Foundation will bear all treatment expenses and also offer free food and accommodation for the children's escorts.

"The children will receive world-class medical treatment here," said R. Basil, chief executive officer of the hospital.

A social worker of Baghdad, Mirian Mothman, was on the forefront in identifying these children, he said.

Renowned paediatric cardiac surgeon and consultant at the Manipal Heart Foundation, K.M. Cherian, and Jonathan Miles from Israel, made efforts to make the visit possible.

Dr. Cherian will lead the team of cardiac surgeons and cardiologists from the foundation.

The team includes Subash Chandra, P. Padmakumar, Jayaranganath, Ganeshakrishnan Iyer, Devanand, Jospeh Xavier, and Samir Rao.

A medical team of doctors and nurses were also accompanying the children as observers.

The foundation would help them update their skills.

He said that at present, 14 children, part of a batch of 22 patients from Tanzania, were undergoing treatment for complex heart problems.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Health, United Republic of Tanzania, they arrived here from Dar-es-Salam last Saturday.

Apart from routine bypass surgeries on "beating heart" and valve replacements, the children will be treated by surgeons experienced in conducting rare operations.

These procedures may include arterial switch, double switch, and repair of univentricular hearts.
