Mistaken for militants, Armymen killed by police
By Our Special Correspondent
GUWAHATI,
JAN. 7.
Two Army personnel including a Major were killed in Dibrugarh district yesterday when Assam police personnel mistook them for militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
The Assam Home Commissioner, B.M. Mazumdar, told The Hindu that the "unfortunate incident" occurred due to a communication gap as both the agencies had gone to the same spot for an ambush following a tip-off about movement of ULFA militants. He said that neither the Army nor the police party was aware of each other's presence.
The incident occurred at Na-Khongia under the Tengakhat police station when police personnel in civvies waiting in two houses in the area for ULFA militants surrounded the army personnel who were also in civil dress.
The deceased Army personnel have been identified as Major Mukesh Chaurasia and jawan Bikash Sensusa.
