Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 7. The district Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy, has expressed his displeasure over the tardy progress of `Integrated Land Development Scheme' in the district. He regretted that officials were more engaged in holding regular meetings rather than focusing on actual development works at the ground level. Reviewing progress of the `Indira Prabha' scheme launched on November 1, 2004, at the Sub-Collector's office here on Friday, the Collector asked members of the mandal-level project facilitation teams to focus on actual development of land, so that they were brought under cultivation at the earliest to provide a source of livelihood to the beneficiaries. Under the scheme, 5,483 acres of barren land belonging to 5,600 poor families in 27 mandals of Vijayawada, Machilipatnam and Nuzivid revenue divisions were to be brought under cultivation with Government intervention. The surplus lands were distributed to families about two decades ago, but they had been left barren by the beneficiaries, as they did not have the wherewithal to cultivate them.
Rs. 12-crore funding
Under the Indira Prabha scheme, the district administration had decided to pump in Rs. 12 crores for taking up integrated development of land by providing all the necessary facilities like creation of bore wells, power supply, bringing the lands to a cultivable stage and providing necessary farming techniques. The project facilitation teams, with the local MROs as coordinators, had been formed for the purpose. However, the necessary development works had not progressed to the anticipated level, Mr. Reddy felt.
