Projects brook no delay: Ponnala
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
JAN. 7.
The Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah, has warned that the delay in execution of irrigation projects contemplated by the State Government would not only lead to cost escalation but deny farmers timely irrigation facility.
Addressing a meeting of non-gazetted officers of the Irrigation Department here on Friday, Mr. Laxmaiah said some vested interests had set up obstacles to the projects to gain political mileage. But, the Government was determined to complete them.
He said the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was credited with the view that there could be no development worth the name if the irrigation sector was neglected.
The Principal Secretary, Irrigation, C.V.S.K. Sarma, said Dr. Reddy was monitoring the progress of the projects on an hourly basis. The Additional Secretary, Irrigation, Siva Kumar, said the State ranked second after Punjab in taking up such a massive programme of implementing projects. He feared desertification of Mahbubnagar and Anantapur districts if the projects were not completed. The State president of A.P. Non-Gazetted Officers Association, S.V. Subba Rao, spoke.
