Ganja plantations destroyed in Attappady

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, JAN. 7. The Central Excise officials of the Kozhikode and Palakkad regions have claimed to have destroyed ganja plants that could fetch Rs.22.5 crores in the international market, in Attappady Hills.

The officials said here today that a 50-member raiding party had destroyed ganja plants cultivated in seven plots extending over 11 acres at Malleswara Mudi in the Murugala forest range of Attappady Hills.

The officials said they had destroyed 54,000 grown-up plants and 5,400 saplings of the `Neelachadayan' variety in the raids. The banned killer plant was cultivated using modern irrigation facilities like water sprinklers, they said.

The raid was led by the Central Excise Superintendents K. Devadasan Nair, C.D. Jose and K.A. Francis.

The authorities had carried out similar anti-ganja operations in the hills recently.
