Government will safeguard RTC, says Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 7. The Transport Minister, S. Santosh Reddy, on Friday assured the employees of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) that the Government would do everything required to ensure that it turns into a profit making corporation.

At the valedictory of the 16th Road Safety Week celebrations that began on January 3, he said the Government was systematically going about its promise of safeguarding the corporation.

He said the Congress Government had initiated steps to undo the damage done in the nine-year tenure of the earlier Telugu Desam Government. "Until we undo the wrongs and put the corporation firmly on the path of progress you should cooperate with us by not taking to the path of agitation," he said.

Reimbursement

The Minister said Rs. 167 crores had been released a few weeks ago as partial reimbursement of expenses, apart from Rs. 100 crores as a soft loan. The high-level committee to analyse the RTC's financial woes would submit an interim report within two months and a final report in six months.

Illegal operations

To check illicit operations, 57 Assistant Motor Vehicles Inspectors were being recruited and police officers up to the rank of Sub-Inspectors had been empowered to tackle this menace, he said.
