SRINAGAR, JAN. 7 . A deputy commandant of the Border Security Force, a jawan and a policeman were killed and four persons, including a security officer, injured when a two-man `fidayeen' squad attacked the Income Tax office here today. One of the militants was shot dead in the exchange of fire that followed. The multi-storeyed building housing the Income Tax office caught fire in the gun-battle. Over 70 people, including 50 officials of the IT Department and visitors, trapped inside were later rescued. Eyewitnesses said the two militants forced their way into the IT office in Barbar Shah locality around 3.30 p.m. hurling grenades and firing indiscriminately. They entered the building and opened fire at the personnel of the 27 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force guarding it. The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed in the adjacent Ranbhir Bhavan opened up at the militants. The area was cordoned off by police, the CRPF and BSF personnel and an offensive led by the Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir zone, Javed Mukhdoomi, was launched. A commandant of the 43 battalion of the BSF, Rathore was injured when the security forces stormed the building and the lone militant continued firing.
