VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 7. K.B. Pujari of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, won the 62 kg category gold with a total lift of 247.5 kg in the all-India inter-university weightlifting (men) championships at the A.U. Assembly Hall here on Friday evening. Pujari led the field in snatch with a best lift of 110 kg and ensured himself of the gold medal with a lift of 137.5 kg in his second attempt in clean and jerk. But he failed in his attempt to create a meet record with a lift of 142.5 kg. There was a three-way tie for the second place after S. Sakti Murugan of Annamalai, S.V.P. Bapu Reddy of Nagarjuna and Manjit Kumar of GNDU, placed third last year, all lifting a toal of 235 kg. Being lesser in body weight, Sakti Murugan was awarded the silver medal and Bapu Reddy had to satisfy himself with the bronze medal. Manjit Kumar, who lifted 230 kg last year, went without a medal this time. In the inaugural event, the 56 kg category, M. Kumarvel of Madras was a clear winner with a total of 220 kg and last year's silver medallist, Gurjit Singh of GNDU lost the same position this year being just 200gm. heavier than M.K. Sinhasane of Shivaji University, after both lifted a total of 212.5 kg. In powerlifting, Lalit Kumar of Pandit Ravishankar University clinched the 56 kg gold. Ajay Kumar of Choudhry Charan Singh University also lifted 505 kg. Lalit Kumar trailed Ajay Kumar in both squat and bench press but made up in the dead lift to clinch the gold. Rajesh Kumar of Jivaji University claimed the 56 kg gold medal. The best physique competitions also commenced. The Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, Y.C. Simhadri, inaugurated the championships.
Powerlifting: 52 kg: 1. Rajesh Kumar (Jivaji), 2. Midhun Joseph (Cochin), 3. G. Ravi (Kakatiya). (squat 180 kg, bench press 110 kg, dead lift 190 kg and total 480 kg). 56 kg: 1. Lalit Kumar (Pt.
