CHENNAI, JAN. 7. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, was given a warm reception at the Old Meenambakkam airport complex when he arrived here on Friday afternoon by a special IAF aircraft from Mumbai. The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by Union Ministers, Sharad Pawar and Prithviraj Chauhan, was received at the tarmac by the Governor, S.S. Barnala, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, the Chief Secretary, Lakshmi Pranesh, and the Director-General of Police, I.K. Govind. Mr. Singh was greeted at the airport by State Ministers, O. Panneerselvam, C. Ponnaiyan and D. Jayakumar. The top brass of the city police department and representatives of the three defence services in the city were then introduced to the Prime Minister. Later, Mr. Manmohan Singh was escorted by the Special Protection Group to a shamiana where the Union Ministers representing the DMK welcomed him. The Union Ministers, Dayanidhi Maran, T.R. Baalu, R. Anbumani, R. Velu, and Palanimanickam, and the DMK party leaders K. Anbazhagan, Arcot N. Veerasamy, Duraimurugan, and M.K. Stalin were among those who greeted the Prime Minister. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, was also present. . The TNCC (I) president, G.K. Vasan, and Congress leaders, S.R. Balasubramonian, K.V. Thangkabalu, were among those who received the Prime Minister. The Acting National Security Adviser, M.K. Narayanan, accompanied the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister, accompanied by the Governor, Mr. Barnala, drove straight to the Raj Bhavan. On Saturday, the Prime Minister is scheduled to leave for Port Blair to make an on-the-spot inspection of the tsunami-affected regions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Special plane
The Chennai Air Traffic Control (ATC), which has been coordinating the despatch of relief for the tsunami-affected Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the last few days, had a different task today handling the arrival of a special Rajdoot Boeing-737 Indian Air Force (IAF) plane. Newspersons got their first surprise when they were allowed into the "restricted operational area". DMK and Congress leaders were waiting nearby. Mr. Narayanan, exchanged pleasantries with everyone, followed by the top brass of the State Intelligence Department led by its chief, A.X. Alexander.
