CHENNAI, JAN. 7. Various organisations from all over the country have been contributing either funds or rations towards relief works for the tsunami victims across the State. Families numbering 18,144 between Tollgate to Tiruvanmiyur were given Rs. 2,000 each and rations worth Rs.3,62,88,000 by the Chennai Collectorate from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. About 8,000 students were provided notebooks. Doctors of Batra Hospital, Delhi and Kamal Bhushan of Oriental Bank of Commerce, Delhi donated Rs. 5.50 lakhs worth of medicines to Indian Red Cross Society. The organisation also received $25,000 from Chevron Texaco Corporation India. ING Group has announced that it would contribute $ 1 million towards the relief fund for those affected in South and South-East Asia. The Evangelical Church of India provided clothes and rations to about 1,200 families of north Chennai coastal areas on Wednesday and boats to affected fishermen of K.V.Kuppam near Ennore.
Notebooks donated
About 2,100 notebooks were donated by Jaigopal Garodia Foundation to the students affected by tsunami. They had also donated Rs.1 lakh to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. St.John Ambulance, Tamil Nadu branch, has distributed Rs.5 lakhs worth of materials to victims at Nagapattinam, Kanyakumari and Cuddalore. World Vision has so far distributed relief materials to 1,000 families in Cuddalore district and 1,000 more families at Chennai. The second phase of their operation would focus on the long-term rehabilitation. Brahma Kumaris Worlwide and Global Hospital organised a peace march besides distributing relief materials. The volunteers of Theosophical Order of Service, a non-governmental organisation, distributed provisions, medicines and textbooks to places, including Chennai and Cuddalore. Lions Club International, district 324-A1, distributed rations to 700 families in Uroorkuppam and Alkatkuppam at Besant Nagar. Rapha Research Foundation and Charitable Trust gave away food and materials to 34 families and are planning to build houses for the affected. Red Crescent Society of India also offered medical aids to affected areas. Teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya at Car Nicobar who survived the tsunami attack were given a monetary relief of Rs.10,000 each by the Air Force and were assured of jobs near their home towns. Students were assured of admission in schools of their choice. The Hindu Colony Chellammal Vidyalaya, Nanganallur, organised an exhibition on Tsunami where in 343 models were displayed. The need on the part of the Disaster Management Group to meet such emergency relief operations and coordination of voluntary organisations were stressed at a meeting jointly organised by Shreyans Group of Companies, Shree Tamilnad Jain Mahamandal and Lions Club of Madras Leo City. The Shastri Bhavan Central Government Employees' Coordination Committee has appealed to the government to waive the existing ceiling of 5 per cent of Direct Recruitment vacancies to facilitate jobs to tsunami victims. SMILE, a voluntary organisation distributed clothes to about 13,000 people and sent relief materials to Andaman. To contribute towards the cause, contact 98841 99284. The Young Men's Christian Association, Madras, has decided to assist the children who lost their parents in the disaster by providing education in schools managed by them and admitting them in their destitute homes at Fort Boys Town and Kollivakkam. Call for funds
Exnora International's volunteers have been involved in distribution of provisions, clothes and medicines. The organisation has called for funds to provide temporary shelters for victims at the Andamans through a ship that is due to leave to the island on January 10. Funds may be contributed before January 10 at 20, Giriappa Salai, T.Nagar. Ph: 24759477 or 52193595. The Murugappa Group of companies will be making an overall contribution of Rs.2.5 crores for the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund and specific efforts to help the affected communities in and around Chennai, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. These funds are being channellised through AMM Foundation, a trust formed by the group to discharge Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) activities of the group. The employees of the group are also directly involved in the relief operations. The chairman, Ramco group of companies, has announced the group's contribution of Rs.1.13 crores. The group has already distributed relief materials in the affected areas, under the supervision of Ramco Social Service League, with the cooperation of company stockists, dealers and government officials.
