Weather

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 31.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 19.5 degrees Celsius, on Friday. Humidity dropped from 88 per cent in the morning to 59 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Friday, according to Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry:

Groundnut oil-51, palmolein oil-39.25, sunflower oil-51, tamarind (flower variety)-30 to 37, tamarind (karipuli variety)-45 to 57, chillis (A.C)-20 to 27, (non-A.C)-12 to 14, rice (2716)-12, rice (super fine)-12.50, rice (sona masoori)-15 to 16, samba masoori-13 to 14, black gram-20.70 to 24.80, red gram (Desavali)-22, (Pandiripalem)-23.50 and (Nagpur)-26.

Vidyut Adalat

The Transco officials will conduct a Vidyut Adalat at the office of the DEE opposite the rythu bazaar near PWD grounds in Vijayawada on Saturday.

Grievances pertaining to defective or adjustment bills, wrong meter readings, replacement of burnt or broken meters, voltage problem, damaged poles, interruption of power supply, loose spans, missing seals and leakage of oil from transformers would be attended to at the Adalat which would bet held between 10 a.m. and 12 noon.

Annual day

The Nirmala High School will celebrate its annual day on January 11 on the school premises. In a statement, the Principal, Sister Tereasa Joseph, said the Assistant Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Vijayawada, Yarlagadda Sailaja, would be the chief guest while the District Vocational Education Officer, K. Viswanatham, would preside. The provincial superior of Nirmala Sisters-Vijayawada, Agnes Martis, the Principal of N.S.M Public School, John Kallarackal, and actress, Laya, an ex-student of the school, would be the guests of honour.

New cell in bank

Corporation Bank conducted a meeting at the Bezwada Jewellery and Bullion Merchants Association hall here on Friday on the occasion of opening of the bank's gold business cell.

In a statement, the bank's zonal manager, L.N. Reddy, pointed out that the Corporation Bank had completed 99 successful years of its existence.

Medical camp

The seven-member team of US-based doctors who participated in the mega medical camp organised by members of the Rotary Club of Vijayawada to mark the centenary celebrations of the club conducted about 75 surgeries at the four-day camp, according to a statement from the chairman of the Rotary Medical Services Committee, B.V.Mohan Rao.

Relief fund

Employees of Bajaj Alliance Life Insurance Company Limited decided to contribute a day's salary towards Tsunami Relief Fund. In a statement, the company's country manager, Sam Ghosh, said it was a collective decision and the employees had volunteered to contribute a day's salary.
