More come forward for tsunami victims

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 7. Moving from donating money to more concrete contributions, non government organisations, multinationals as well as ordinary citizens have come forth to help out people whose lives have been wrecked by the killer tsunami waves.

In a bid to reach out to the most vulnerable section of the victims -- children -- Plan International India together with the Childline India Foundation has decided to set up crisis centres in the six Tsunami-affected areas of Tamil Nadu and Andamans and Nicobar Islands. These centres will be set up in Chennai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Pondicherry, Kanyakumari and Port Blair. The centres will provide telephone connectivity to children and their families through Childline's universal number 1098. Going all out to ensure that the contributions that people make reaches the right destination, DHL has up set up a free courier service. This initiative is supported by ASOCHAM and Red Cross. An attempt to make it easier for citizens who want to donate but don't know how to do it, the DHL Relief Helpline (1600-22-666) will be operational from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The employees of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited have also contributed a day's salary amounting to Rs. 65 lakhs to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. The cheque was handed over to the Union Minister for Power P.M. Sayeed. The NHPC had earlier donated Rs. 1 crores to the Prime Minister Relief Fund.

A delegation of eunuchs led by their leader Asha Swarasti Das met the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, to do their bit for the victims. They contributed Rs. 1 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi National Relief and Welfare Trust. The Kalka Education Society also handed over a cheque of Rs. 3.2 lakhs to Mr. Sharma towards the tsunami cause.
